Le Labo — Santal 33 | Sample
The Architecture: Le Labo Santal 33
Whatever one thinks of the ubiquity — and Santal 33 has earned its detractors — it remains a compositional achievement worth examining on its own terms. Deceptively simple architecture: Australian sandalwood and cedar form the backbone, reinforced by the dry, almost papery texture of papyrus that is the composition's least-discussed but most distinctive ingredient. The opening is the hook: cardamom and a violet accord cut through leather with a smokiness that reads as open space, sunbaked earth, a landscape without moisture. Iris and ambrox smooth the transition into a warm, persistent drydown. It became inescapable because it is genuinely good. That remains true.
